In Italy there are 3 free gateways that allow to call almost any destitantion worldwide, fixed or mobile lines.
If you want to use them you only need to find a cheap way to call italian fixed lines. I can suggest you these services:
Truphone: free call to Italy until 29 February 2008 but you need a compatible wifi mobile phone
Voipbuster: 60 minute free for new users and if you top-up your account it offer free call to Italy (max 300 mins/week).

When you hear the tone, compose the number you need with international prefix followed by #. Examples:
00145412345654# : here, 001 is the USA prefix
00447701234567# : here, 0044 is UK prefix
You can call any destination, mobile or fixed, worldwide and you will pay (if you haven’t a free offer) only the call to an italian fixed line number.
We don’t know the owner of those gateways but they are working since December 2006.[here the evidence]
One more thing: your caller-id is forwarded to the destination call. So, if you are using your phone, your interlocutor will se your number in his display!
